Cambodia and Azerbaijan Strengthen Bilateral Ties and Cooperation

Phnom Penh, 31 January 2025 – Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly, received a courtesy call Friday from H.E. Shovgi Mehdizada, Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

During the meeting, Samdech conveyed her heartfelt congratulations and best wishes on the re-election of the Honorable Mrs. Sahiba Gafarova as Speaker of the Milli Majlis, expressing admiration for her active support for Cambodia in bilateral and international fora.

Samdech emphasized the crucial role of people-to-people ties in connecting individuals from both countries. She also highlighted Azerbaijan's people-centered approach as a foundation for mutual respect and benefit.

The National Assembly President stressed the importance of the health sector, noting that a healthy population was in line with the Pentagonal Strategy of the government led by Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet.

Samdech noted Azerbaijan’s presence in both government and parliamentary fora, reflecting progress in friendship and cooperation.

The Ambassador, who resides in Hanoi, highlighted the importance of parliamentary cooperation, noting that a new friendship group was committed to fulfilling its objectives. He stressed that parliamentary cooperation extended beyond bilateral relations to regional and global levels.

He expressed satisfaction with the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Azerbaijan and proposed annual celebrations.

In a meeting with Cambodian students who graduated from Azerbaijan, the Ambassador said he discussed the creation of an alumni network, acknowledging the important role of people-to-people diplomacy and strong emotional ties.

He said the Azerbaijan-Cambodia Parliamentary Friendship planned to visit Cambodia and that he would invite H.E. Suos Yara, Chairman of the Cambodia-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Friendship Group, to visit Azerbaijan to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.
