Samdech Khuon Sudary Leads Cambodian Delegation to Pay Final Respects to the Late Lao National Assembly President

Vientiane, Lao PDR, 10 August 2026 — Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia, on Monday afternoon led a high-level parliamentary delegation to pay final respects to Hon. Dr. Xaysomphone Phomvihane, President of the National Assembly of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, in Vientiane.
 
Samdech Khuon Sudary made the visit as the High Representative of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian People's Party and President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Cambodia, reaffirming Cambodia's solidarity with the Lao leadership and people during their time of national mourning.
 
Hon. Dr. Xaysomphone Phomvihane passed away on 8 August 2026 at the age of 70 following an illness. He was a senior leader of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and a distinguished statesman who served in key leadership positions at both the local and national levels.
Throughout his lifetime, he dedicated his wisdom, experience, and unwavering commitment to the Party's revolutionary cause, national development, and the prosperity and well-being of the Lao people.
 
He made lasting contributions to strengthening the traditional friendship and cooperation between Laos and Cambodia. He also played a pivotal role in advancing parliamentary diplomacy and promoting people-to-people ties under the two countries' Comprehensive and Long-Term Strategic Partnership.
Prior to the visit, Samdech Khuon Sudary sent letters of condolence to Hon. Sounthone Xayyachak, Vice-President of the National Assembly of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, and H.E. Mrs. Viphavanh Phomvihane, spouse of the late Hon. Dr. Xaysomphone Phomvihane.
On behalf of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia and on her own behalf, Samdech Khuon Sudary extended her deepest condolences to the National Assembly, the Government, the people, and the bereaved family of Laos.
 
Samdech paid tribute to the late Lao leader as a dedicated statesman whose visionary leadership and invaluable contributions to parliamentary cooperation and the enduring friendship and comprehensive strategic partnership between Cambodia and Laos will be remembered with profound respect.
She also expressed her hope that the Lao people and the bereaved family would find strength, comfort, and resilience during this time of profound sorrow while honoring the lasting legacy of the late Hon. Dr. Xaysomphone Phomvihane.
 
According to the programme, on 11 August, after paying final respects at the National Convention Center, Samdech Khuon Sudary is scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Hon. Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith, General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and President of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, before returning to Cambodia.
