Vientiane, Lao PDR, 11 August 2026 — Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia, on Tuesday led a high-level Cambodian parliamentary delegation to pay final respects to the late Hon. Dr. Xaysomphone Phomvihane, President of the National Assembly of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, at the National Convention Centre in Vientiane.
Samdech attended the state funeral as the High Representative of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian People's Party and President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
During the solemn ceremony, Samdech laid a wreath and paid tribute to the late Lao parliamentary leader, who passed away on 8 August 2026 at the age of 70. Samdech also met Mrs. Viphavanh Phomvihane and members of the bereaved family, personally expressing her deepest condolences and sharing their profound grief over the loss of their beloved family member.
She remembered Hon. Dr. Xaysomphone as a highly respected statesman, a trusted friend of Cambodia, and a leader who devoted his life to serving the Lao nation and people. Recalling their many meetings over the years, Samdech spoke warmly of the late President's commitment to strengthening relations between the two National Assemblies and bringing the peoples of Cambodia and Laos closer together.
She also highlighted his important role in advancing trilateral parliamentary cooperation among Cambodia, Laos, and Viet Nam, including his leadership in convening the inaugural Meeting of the Leaders of the three National Assemblies in Vientiane.
Samdech stressed that although Hon. Dr. Xaysomphone had passed away, his vision, contributions, and legacy would continue to inspire future generations to carry forward the traditional friendship, solidarity, and cooperation among the neighboring countries.
In her condolence message to the family, Samdech wrote that Hon. Dr. Xaysomphone was “a great statesman who devoted his whole life to the nation.” She acknowledged that words could not ease the family's pain, but assured them that they remained in her thoughts and prayers.
On behalf of the National Assembly of Cambodia and on her own behalf, Samdech extended her deepest sympathy to H.E. Mrs. Viphavanh Phomvihane and the bereaved family, offering them strength and comfort during this difficult time.
Samdech prayed for the soul of the late Hon. Dr. Xaysomphone Phomvihane to rest in eternal peace, while reaffirming Cambodia's commitment to honoring his legacy by continuing to strengthen the longstanding friendship and solidarity between Cambodia and Laos.
