Phnom Penh, 3 September 2024 — Samdech Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia, received a courtesy call from Hon. Ms. Zong Ming, Vice-Chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Congress of China, and her delegation at the National Assembly palace this morning.

On the occasion, Samdech expressed pleasure in meeting the head of delegation, and considered the visit a significant step in strengthening the ironclad friendship and comprehensive strategic cooperation between Cambodia and China. This partnership, rooted in the contributions of historical figures such as the Late King Father Norodom Sihanouk, Chairman Mao Zedong, and Premier Zhou Enlai, continues under the current leadership of President Xi Jinping, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, and Samdech Hun Manet.

Samdech Khuon Sudary expressed heartfelt gratitude to the party, state, and people of China for their invaluable support in the reconstruction and development of Cambodia. She highlighted that China’s assistance has fostered development, reduced poverty, strengthened political independence, and elevating Cambodia to equal status with other countries.

Samdech expressed strong support for President Xi Jinping’s call for superpowers to maintain good communication for global peace and sustainability. Cambodia unwaveringly supports the One-China policy and opposes any interference in the internal affairs of other countries. Samdech also congratulated China on its achievements under the leadership of Xi Jinping, noting its progress towards becoming a modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, and harmonious.

During the conversation, Hon. Zong Ming expressed her excitement about visiting Cambodia for the first time. She thanked for the warm greeting and hospitality, mentioning that she felt at home. She recalled the visit to Shanghai of His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni and the Queen Mother in 2021, during which she, along with Hon. Li Qiang, Secretary of the Communist Party, had the honor of a royal audience. She had hoped to visit Cambodia someday, and now she is here.

Hon. Zong Ming highlighted the strong friendship and brotherhood between China and Cambodia, built on mutual trust, mutual respect, and comprehensive cooperation. She also emphasized the shared commitment to supporting China’s Community with a Shared Future and fostering a harmonious society.

Samdech Khuon Sudary mentioned that the infrastructure and development of Cambodia today are evident of China’s significant contributions. She emphasized that while Cambodia is not entirely dependent on China, China serves as a crucial foundation for Cambodia’s growth and aspirations.
Finally, Samdech expressed her expectation that the upcoming visit to China will be fruitful and successful, further strengthening the cooperation between the two legislative bodies and countries, as well as enhancing the people to people ties.
